Burgess Everett is Semafor's congressional bureau chief and has covered the United States Senate since 2013, first for Politico and now for Semafor. He's traveled the country covering critical Senate races, written about three different US presidents and broken news on some of the most consequential pieces of legislation and Senate votes in recent history, from Obamacare repeal to the recent tax cuts law. During his career he's interviewed some of the biggest names in politics, including top leaders like Chuck Schumer and John Thune as well as ascendant politicians like JD Vance and Chirs Murphy.
Burgess has navigated a rapidly changing industry during his 20 years in the business, from the old-school print-first philosophy to the online scoop wars and now to a diffuse media landscape where no one outlet is dominant and Americans get their news from every source under the sun. That's why he meets them where they are, whether it's on social media, podcasts or Semafor's daily DC report and unique enterprise stories.
Burgess has moderated dozens of conversations with top lawmakers in Washington, including recently hosting nearly 10 conversations at the Semafor World Economy event with senators ranging from Susan Collins of Maine to Todd Young of Indiana to Steve Daines of Montana, making news on the Iran War, President Donald Trump and Daines's political future.
Contrary to stereotype, Burgess spends his downtime doing anything but politics. He's a massive Terps fan, the father of two brotastic boys and husband to an amazing wife and a native Mainer.
